Runner Up: Absolucion by Gkkstitch
Judge’s Comments:
“I have read so many fics over the last year, since I started reading Twific, that it's hard to surprise me and even harder to make me rave about them. Absolucion, however, surprised me in many, many ways. This fic is exactly why I signed up to be a judge for the OC Awards; it's innovative, original, and unlike anything I'd ever read before. I got sucked in and found myself unable to put it down. The way the author makes good use of not only the well-known characters, but also the lesser-known, and of course, the original character of Rolle. This story is a sequel to Antithesis, which I shamefully have to admit that I haven't read yet due to time restrictions, but it's definitely at the top of my list!”

Cinna #21 TEASER

They're using Peeta to get to Katniss. That means she's being effective and they're trying to unbalance her. I can't let them. I can't let them use Peeta like this. Cinna would never have stood for this. I feel my skin tingling all over as I think of him and what he would do if he knew how they were using the boy.

Cinna #20 TEASER

I've always had a pretty clear suspicion of what my fate would be, ever since I first took Katniss' mockingjay pin to Haymitch. As I look down the road I walk now, I can hear Claudius reciting the odds. My chances of escaping to District 13 are possible, but slim. The chance of escaping with Myka, Portia and the prep teams is non-existent. The odds of me going to prison are very high. The odds of something worse... well, I can only hope that my status and reputation in the Capitol will weaken the odds there. Katniss' fiery transformation into the very symbol of the rebellion will not be lost on President Snow, and he won't allow my actions to go unanswered.

When I'm not arrested after the interview, I remind myself that they need me on camera tomorrow. There are always small clips of the pre-game events. One or more of the cameras will get a shot of Katniss and myself ascending to the hovercraft. After her and Peeta's stunts with the Gamemakers—each of them scoring an unheard of twelve—it's to be sure we'll get a lot of attention from the cameras

Cinna #19 TEASER

I may be a dressmaker, but I'm also a stylist and that means something much more. The people in my trade are magicians. We can make scars disappear. We can turn young girls into icons. We can start revolutions. Raising my eyes, I look into the mirror and behind me. The winning wedding dress hangs on a mannequin.

I trace my finger over the drawing in front of me now. The last one made was the first one I sketched: a battle uniform. I never wanted it to come to this for her, but I know she can do it. She won't want to, but she'll do it.

I pick up my pen and leave a note for her. "I'm still betting on you."

Cinna #18 TEASER

No one is there when I arrive. I pour a glass of water and take a seat, but I'm not kept waiting long. When the door opens, it's not Portia who enters. It's President Snow. He comes in and I can see that he leaves two large gentlemen in suits outside the door.

I manage a polite smile even though my mouth goes dry. "Mister President." I stand up to greet him and clasp my hands behind my back, knowing this makes me appear relaxed even though my hands are shaking.

"Cinna," he says and takes a seat, instantly clicking into the computer. He turns the screen toward him so I cannot see it.

"I'm surprised to see you here, sir. The Opening Ceremonies..." The president always says a few words to the tributes at the City Circle from the balcony of his mansion.

"Yes." His tone is cool, but I try to tell myself he's simply being formal; that it isn't suspicion making him reserved. "I don't have a lot of time, so I'll be brief." He motions me to sit and I suddenly wonder where Portia could be since we were both told to be here.

When I take a seat, the president leans back in his own chair and quietly regards me before speaking. "I want you to dress Katniss in her wedding gown for Caesar's interview."

Cinna #17 TEASER

I really did not mind designing twenty-four wedding gowns for Katniss. Truth be told, I could have designed twenty more because I enjoyed it so much. Getting away from Caesar after the presentation of the photo shoot had been a challenge. I had been told that I was only going to be introduced, but Caesar kept his hand on my arm the entire time the cameras were on us. Tonight was as much my night as it was Katniss'. Caesar asked me question after question as each of the final six dresses were revealed.

I do not want to be anywhere near cameras, however, when the Quarter Quell is announced.

Cinna update, Drabble 16

I've seen scars from a lash before. It makes me worry why she feels she has to lie to me about what happened. I turn to get a foundation sponge and she steps away to put on a light robe. She's limping and this injury is obviously more recent. Taking her hand in mine, I hold it up so she stands still. The robe drapes to her knees so I can easily see the swelling of her left ankle and the purple discoloration of her heel. She stares at me with an expression that tells me not to ask.

Using a blender and sponge, I complete the task of hiding the scar and work in silence as I adjust her makeup and touch her cheeks with a light brush to soften them. I add a touch of silver around her eyes to brighten the gray. The effect mutes the steel-like quality of her eyes.

"You don't have to protect me, you know," I say very quietly as I work.

"Yes, I do," she says just as softly in a flat voice.

Cinna #15 TEASER

"Caesar and I were just discussing the wedding," the president says as he puts his hand on Caesar's shoulder and brings him into our conversation, "and I'd like you to design Katniss' wedding gown."

I feel irritated on Katniss' behalf that he would presume so much about her own wedding, but thanks to Peeta I know why he's pushing this agenda. "I would, of course, be honored to do it," I say, keeping my feelings out of my voice, "but I wouldn't presume to know what Katniss' wishes are about such a monumental day in her life. A bride's dress is-"

"I'm certain she'd want you," the president says dismissively, cutting me off. He turns to Caesar who is practically bouncing.

Get your favorite fics "to go"!

Did you know you can download your favorite fanfic site stories in an easy to read format, load them onto your computer, and read them offline?

No? Then let me introduce you to the "Fanfiction Lightweight Automated Grabber" also known as FLAG. All you have to do is enter the story ID into the FLAG field, select which format you want to save the file as, and click GET.

If you're an iPad user or if you have a mobile device that can read .pdf files, you can even EMAIL the story to yourself to read when you are offline. Goodreader is a nice .pdf reading app, but if you're on an iPad, you can even open your downloaded fiction using iBook.

I, personally, prefer iBook because it also lets me annotate the .pdf files. I can highlight sections and even create notes in the .pdf file which are GREAT if you want to review the chapter later!

If you have trouble finding the story ID number, here's a screen shot of what it looks like. You can actually find it in two locations on the FanFic site page when you are viewing the story, and it's also in your FanFic story alert emails.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave comments here and I'll address them as best I can. This is a simply marvelous tool, so be sure to bookmark it in your browser!

http://flag.erayd.net/

If you find this online tool helpful, then don't forget to click that "Donate" button to show your appreciation to the very kind man in New Zealand who created this FREE service for fans across the world. I've found him to be VERY responsive to suggestions and fixes when things get wonky.

When FF.net changed their format, Steve (his name is Steve) quickly fixed the FLAG to accomodate their new format.

When the fastcgi process that runs FLAG crashed, he was quick to restart it.

When I told him that it would be great to be able to email the .pdf file to myself so I could load it on my iPad, he eagerly added the "email" feature!

He's just marvelous.

A Series of drabbles from Cinna's POV (Hunger Games)

I've now done one story from Peeta's point of view and another from Gale's, but I have to admit that the character who truly captured my attention has always been Cinna with his quiet manner. He wasn't like the others at the Capitol and I wanted an opportunity to explore that without turning it into an enormous project.

So I give you "Cinna", a series of drabbles surrounding key moments in the Hunger Games Trilogy that gives you a further peek into his character, his thoughts, and what he was doing, while trying to enhance the story in my own modest way.

You can find Cinna on Fanfiction.net under this link.

Canon, Alt-Universe and All-Human

There's some great articles here to read about the differences. I'm reposting them because so many folks have asked me (cuz I'm a fan and I'm old and I'm in a lot of fandoms). They politely call it "wisdom", but I know better. (chuckle)

She smiled, waiting for the joke. "You're a vampire," she repeated sardonically, "who's been alone for almost seventy years."

He nodded.

She narrowed her eyes, trying to suppress her smile. "Prove it."

He could only think of one terrifyingly obvious way to prove he was a vampire and that was not going to happen. He had to think of another way.

Absolución teaser from epilogue

Her phone vibrated, alerting her to a text message. She glanced at it and frowned at the blunt message. 'where r u?' Rachel didn't recognize the number and turned her attention back to the meeting. It buzzed again ten minutes later. 'did I copy the wrong number?'

She pulled the phone closer and replied, 'who is this?'

'from paris' was the cryptic reply.

She stared at the phone, her mouth going dry. The butterflies in her stomach seemed to be trying to reach her racing heart. She looked up, not seeing or hearing the meeting any more as her mind spun in a million directions at once. She looked at the phone again and tried to type a reply. Her fingers were shaking and it took several attempts to type the few letters, and then she couldn't find the question mark even though it was right in front of her.

'rolle?'

MORE Hunger Games

Just before Mockingjay came out, I started to read Hunger Games and Catching Fire again, so everything would be fresh in my mind. Okay, so I only made it through Hunger Games, and I was overcome with the desire to write a Gale POV for Lolashoes' upcoming birthday. It will be posting soon.

Then I started having Cinna in my head! No idea why, but he was quite chatty and demanded to be heard, so I started to write little notes that then became drabbles, and then became a LOT of drabbles!! (I told you he was chatty!) So, to shut him up, here's his story... Cinna

Apologies for the delays

In a recent A/N I asked for patience as I got through what I knew was going to be a busy time for me. Sadly, once I got past that time, and got the bug to write, I was hit with the death of a friend who succumbed to complications from cancer. And hot on the heals of that, I was hit with the death of another very close friend. It has sapped all my energy away.

I'll do my best to update as soon as I can. I'm very close to having the next chapter done for you, but the creative process has come to a grinding halt.

Your patience is greatly appreciated, and I hope you all stay happy, healthy and safe.

Absolución teaser from chapter 20

He wouldn't meet her eyes and after a long moment of silence, Bella nudged his shoulder with her own.

"Hi," she said.

The flicker of a smile showed that he knew what she was trying to do. "Hi."

"How have you been?" Bella asked, hoping silly pleasantries would help put him at ease.

This time the faint smile lingered longer. "Oh, you know; same old, same old. Depressed, lonely, a psychotic rampage here and there. Nothing new."

Bella nodded, keeping her nerves in check. "Same shit, different day?"

"Pretty much," he muttered and with a labored sigh, he shook his head.

Absolución teaser from chapter 18

Aro recognized the stony expression and laughed at the irony. "You're as stubborn as their teenagers, and just as self-absorbed." He ignored the flash of annoyance on Carlisle's face. "You assume I'm too old to understand, to set in my ways to appreciate what you're going through. Yet you fail to appreciate that perhaps in my age and wisdom I might have a larger base of knowledge to draw from?

"I have touched the lives of hundreds of thousands; known their secrets, their sins and their dreams. I have seen parts of the world that I have never travelled to, and watched those places change over the years. I know the location of treasures unheard of. I know the answers to mysteries that have long since lost their questions. The people who have died at my hand took nothing to their graves.

"Have you never once considered that I would have seen atrocities so heinous that even I would be surprised?"

Absolución teaser from chapter 17

Carlisle fell to the floor beside his wife, grunting in pain as a split second before the sound wave pulsed through the air. Spiderweb cracks formed across Carlisle's hands again with the impact as the sound waves literally destabilized the molecules of his body. Fear for Esme's life ripped through Carlisle. What had made her jump out of the scant safety? He ignored the pain and pulled Esme to him, wrapping his arms around her shoulders to shelter her with his body. Why had she put herself in danger like that?

But even as the terrorized question burned through Carlisle's mind, he realized he knew the answer. Esme was a mother in her deepest soul. She was caring, nurturing and selfless to a fault when it came to protecting anyone she felt maternal towards. She had been a grieving mother the day she died and Carlisle had frozen that grief in her for eternity.

She was trapped in that grief ... Esme had found a way to redirect her anguish by substituting her lost son with an entirely new family.

Hunger Games!

Thanks to several friends from Twitter, I have discovered "The Hunger Games" Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. I found myself particularly captivated by the last several pages of the story and decided to write a one-shot of that moment from Peeta's point-of-view.

I hope you enjoy it! The name of this story is the page number in the book. Three seventy-one

Absolución teaser from chapter 16

"You know, as well as any, that an unstable vampire is a danger to us all," Aro snarled. "We can not tolerate any that would break our laws and risk exposure!" he enunciated, angry that Carlisle was being impudent.

"I will not go in there to stop him knowing that you only wait to outside to destroy him!" Carlisle shot back. "I believe in his strength of character. I believe he acts only out of a will to do good."

"Do you now?" Aro sneered, growing thoughtful as he looked around the room at Carlisle's family. "And exactly how strong is that belief, hmm? Would you risk your family?"

Absolución teaser from chapter 15

"I must give you credit, Carlisle, for your choices," Caius said snidely. "You choose to be a doctor. You choose to only give our gift to those dying. You choose when to break your own standards when you conveniently find a human who will clearly be outstanding in our world. I wonder how many dying humans you have really changed?"

Carlilse spun to face him, horrified that anyone could even think like that. He and Caius had never had any sort of friendship beyond polite acquaintances, but they had at least had respectful regard toward one another. He had never realized the true depth of Caius' ruthlessness.

"You know I would never do anything like that," Carlisle said trying to keep the sharpness from his tone.

"Do I? Hmm." Caius continued to needle him in a blatant attempt to prove to the Guard once and for all the real dangers the Cullens represented. "Did you choose to become a teacher to evaluate the young humans to swell your ranks then? Find more of those who would be gifted? Indoctrinate their minds early into your way of thinking?"

Carlisle gaped at him now understanding the depth of the paranoia within Caius that Rolle had warned them about. He saw now how easily Caius' rumormongering could have pushed Aro into action and created these suspicions within the Volturi guards that would encourage them to act on their own.

Absolución teaser from chapter 14

Aro stopped suddenly and met Caius' intense expression. "And what would you do exactly?"

Rage flashed in Caius face at the perceived disdain Aro was implying. Of the three of them, Caius was the only one without powers and it dug in his side like a festering thorn.

Aro allowed his intentional needling to linger a moment before saying the exact opposite to support another option entirely. "If I disappear, then you will have your answer. You will know the boy is too dangerous to keep, and you can do with him what you will."

Absolución teaser from chapter 13

"So you are the one who attacked Carlisle's coven?" Aro's words were matter of fact, but his tone was stiff. "And the one who reportedly killed our own Demetri!" he added with a curious light in his eyes. His voice almost sang as his hands clapped together.

Absolución teaser from chapter 12

"And, Carlisle, I want you to swear that you will not leave me alone in this existence. Don't protect me if you put yourself in harms way. Don't push me away when I stand beside you. You promised we would be together forever... and I can't...." Her voice shook again and she stopped to dig deep for her strength to say what needed to be said. "I can't bear the thought of it without you."

"Esme...!" Carlisle cried softly. His heart broke at her words.

"You promise me that we'll be together forever, even in death," she said so low her voice was barely a hiss. She couldn't stand even the thought of it and she dropped her head onto his shoulder.

"Shh," Carlisle soothed, stroking her soft caramel hair. "Shh." He kissed her hair, nuzzling his nose against her until her gentle shuddering stilled. "I have no wish for death, my love," he assured her. "I just feel lost. Like time has swept me up and spun me til I'm disoriented and dropped me to the ground again. I'm only stumbling, Petal, but never doubt that you are, and have always been, the reason I haven't fallen."

Esme raised her head from his shoulder searching his face for reassurance.

"I swear to you, we will always be together," he said earnestly. "In this life or another."

Shh! It was a SECRET!

Back in December, Lola and I worked on her "Gift Exchange fic", but I couldn't tell anyone about it until after the gifts had been revealed. This was written for ScarlettLetters.

I even tried my hand at making a banner for this story when I found this ridonk awesome-funny picture of a mitten sweater.

Absolución teaser from chapter 11

Carlisle's eyes were apologetic and sad, but he smiled and brought Bella's fingers to his lips, kissing them as he reached out to cup her cheek in his hand.

"You always surprise me," he said, his voice breaking. He looked around at his family. "All of you. Each one of you..." He trailed off, shaking his head. "So remarkable, so full of love." He looked at Rosalie, then Emmett. "Fiercely loyal, and so compassionate." His eyes wandered around the room to Alice, Jasper and Edward. "So bright, strong, determined."

"You gave us that," Esme whispered, leaning over her husband's chair.

Carlisle shook his head. "No, you were always like this. All of you."

"You nurtured those things in us," Rosalie said unexpectedly. "You made it... safe for us to be those things," she added quiet and uncomfortable, but wanting him to know the truth.

Emmett beamed up at his wife, rising to stand with her and pulled her into his arms.

Surprise and gratitude colored Carlisle's face. As he gazed at Rose, it all melted into affection. He looked back at the gentle fingers still caught in his own, and looked up at Bella's expectant face.

"We have a friend to help," he said simply, and Bella's face broke into a warm smile.

Absolución teaser from chapter 10

Alice took a long slow breath as if it caused great exertion. "This is how it starts," Alice whispered back.

"How what starts?" Bella asked before remembering what Alice had said about happiness and worry going hand in hand. She had said that when you're happy, your only worry was losing that happiness. Bella stroked Alice's hair and kissed the top of her head.

"I love you," Alice said.

"I love you, too, Alice," Bella told her and squeezed her tighter, before asking again, "Please tell me what you see."

"The Romanians will be here in less than an hour," Alice whispered. "They're going to tell us what they know about Rolle, and then Carlisle will decide that it isn't safe for anyone if Rolle stays with the Volturi so he'll go to Italy."

Bella tried to understand the worry behind Alice's vision, but could not find it. "Why is that bad?"

Alice started to shake in Bella's arms. "I don't see him coming home," she breathed, her voice filled with fear.

Fictionators Review

This week, The Fictionators posted a special "AU Edition" of the "Fictionator Friday" to give a nod to the sparkly vamps from AUs which may have their basis in books we already know well, but are anything but predictable.

I'm very honored to post that Absolución was included in the list of reviewed stories courtesy of a submission by LolaShoes.

Click here to look over the various AU stories that were reviewed.

Absolución teaser from chapter 9

Edward.

Bella's voice in his mind reached him as if she were standing next to him. Midnight! In a blink of an eye he was standing in their bedroom door. The sight that greeted him stunned him into immobility.

Bella was standing at the window looking out at the dark yard. Only the light on the bedside table was on. Her hair fell over her bare shoulders in waves. Her eyes met his in the reflection of the window. She had prepared for him, prepared for their time together. She was nude.

He took a deep breath to sigh. Instead, he was destroyed by her scent as he breathed in. He could taste her on the air. Edward tensed, fighting to control himself. The tether that always connected them snapped taught, vibrating between them.

Bella felt it, too. Arcs of static raced between them. Even through the reflection of the dark glass of their bedroom window she could see Edward's eyes turn black. She could not look away from them to see if her own eyes were the same, but assumed they were by judging the change in his demeanor. He reached up with one hand and tugged at his shirt, pulling the top fastener free with a pop as if it were held by a snap and not a small black button. There was tiny pinging sound as the button flew across the room and hit the mirror above their dresser.

Absolución teaser from chapter 8

"What is it?" Vladimir asked quietly.

Stefan set the phone down slowly staring at it, his brow drawing down with concern. He did not look at his brother.

"What has happened?" Vladimir asked.

Stefan raised his eyes slowly: blood-hungry dark red stared into blood-full red. He answered with a single word that held a thousand words and worries. "Eleazar."

"Eleazar?" Vladimir repeated. "He's had news of the boy?"

Stefan nodded slowly. "He's been with Carlisle this past month."

Stefan reached out and put his hand on Vladimir's arm. "He attacked him. Marcus was present during the attack. We were right. It was Marcus who turned the boy. The Cullens turned Rolle over to him at his betrayal." Stefan looked meaningfully into the face of his companion. "Marcus took the boy back to Italy with him."

Vladimir staggered back a step and fell heavily into a thick wooden chair. "We are lost," he whispered. "Call Eleazar," he said, his voice low and commanding. "Ask him to make the arrangements for our introduction. We must speak to Carlisle ourselves. We must discover the circumstances of this attack." Vladimir strode urgently to the desk in the other room. "I'll make arrangements for our flight. We leave immediately."

"What if we were wrong about Carlisle? What if he refuses to see us?" Stefan asked.

Vladimir's tone was sharp and intractable. "We're going anyway."

Absolución teaser from chapter 7

"Bella mentioned something the other day." He looked around at each of them now. "When I left her in Forks, doing what I thought was right, would you all agree that I was woefully wrong?"

"Hell yes!" Emmett said loudly.

"Of course," Jasper agreed.

Edward nodded, knowing this was their feeling already. "And if you had to do it all over again, would you let me leave?" he asked, looking now to Carlisle, knowing already how hard that separation was, not only on Bella and himself, but also on the entire family, especially Carlisle.

Carlisle sighed softly. "I would have done more to convince you how wrong you were."

"And if you couldn't?" Edward pressed. "If I left anyway, would you have come after me?"

A quiet tension filled the treetops as both Emmett and Jasper bit their tongues and simply waited for Carlisle to answer.

Their patriarch sighed softly. "Yes."

Edward did not nod or make any other motion to acknowledge he'd won this debate. Instead he said, "Would you agree that maybe we should try to learn from that mistake?"

Carlisle looked thoughtful and considered everything Edward was trying to say. This is hard for me right now, he thought to Edward.

"I know," Edward said gently. "I just need you to consider it. What Rolle is doing is noble, but... wrong."

My take on "venom" in Twilight

Frankly, in my opinion, fic writers take this too far. Stephenie Meyer made a big fuss about "venom" actually entering the blood stream, so that's all I do with it. Open mouth kissing doesn't let venom get into your bloodstream. I'm just careful to not let french kissing go too far. I'm sure Edward would have been pretty insistent on that before he agreed to change Bella. Their teeth are just too sharp, and even a little scratch could be dangerous.

If fic writers are going to let themselves get hung up on french kissing, but then allow the characters to have sex, they're creating a paradox. If a vampire is having intercourse with a virgin, it seems to me that there's a greater than normal chance that venom is going to be entering the bloodstream thru the tearing of the hymen. So why make such a big distinction about kissing?

That being said, I think the best exploration of venom was done by LolaShoes in "Let Your Light Shine." On the more sensitive skin on your body, venom 'tingles' and can create other... hmmm... 'side effects' during moments of elevated heart rate and breathing. See for yourself:

Absolución teaser from chapter 6

He spun her around to face him and she lunged into him just as the elevator doors disappeared behind him. The distance to his arms and lips increased as they staggered though the now open door. They fell across the hall and his back hit the wall with a huff and a moan before her lips finally connected with his. She clenched his hair in her hands to keep him from getting away again. Both of his hands gripped her ass, pulling her even tighter to him.

They weren't going to last long at this rate.

One question (I think I'm going for one random question per review at this rate), why is it called Absolucion? Because I know that AbsoluTion is the forgiveness in the sacrament of reconciliation, and absolución is the same, but in spanish, but is this the reason it's called that?

I knew I wanted the title to be Absolution, but when I checked FanFic there were already 20 other stories with that title. I put a call out to some old fan-friends of mine about what they suggest I do, and one of them found this dictionary definition...

I've always LOVED researching the history of words, so I decided to use the original spelling of the word instead of the contemporary spelling. :) It made sense to me as it expressed a personal fascination of mine, as well as linking the story to the past as Chapter 2 does.

And... on a purely selfish note... it makes my story easier to search for by spelling it differently. heh heh
